My first instinct was to slam the door and pretend I hadn’t seen it. But ignoring it wouldn’t make it disappear, so we crouched closer, careful not to touch it.
Up close, it looked even more surreal—like frozen sea coral, but soft at the edges, as if it might pulse or breathe. I felt my skin crawl just imagining it growing quietly in the dark while we were gone.
We started searching online, comparing photos, typing panicked descriptions: “white branching fungus bathroom,” “coral mold tile floor.”
Gradually, the mystery shifted from horror to fascination. It was likely an aggressive fungus feeding on hidden moisture, thriving in the sealed, humid room.
Still, knowing its name didn’t make it less unsettling. That evening, as we carefully scraped it away in gloves and masks, I couldn’t shake the thought: our home had kept evolving without us, in ways we never imagined.
