My 83-year-old mother had always valued her independence. Even when shopping became a little more difficult, she preferred to choose her own groceries, carry her own wallet, and take her time making decisions. One Saturday, we stopped at a busy grocery store. Mom only needed a few things, but when it was time to pay, she had trouble finding her wallet. Her hands were trembling slightly as she searched through her purse. The customer behind us became impatient. “Oh, come on,” the woman said. Mom immediately apologized and continued looking. The woman moved her cart closer and sighed again. “If it takes this long, maybe someone should help her,” she said. I turned around and calmly explained that my mother simply needed another moment.
