For years, Karen Grassle let the public believe in the gentle myth of Michael Landon as the benevolent patriarch of Walnut Grove, even as she carried memories that did not fit the glow of sunset-lit fields. In her memoir, she describes walking onto a set where
Landon’s authority was absolute: he wrote, produced, directed, and decided who mattered. She, as the show’s emotional center, discovered she was being paid far less than male colleagues with fewer scenes and less responsibility.
When she dared ask for parity, the warmth vanished. Scripts shrank. Distance grew.
