An Emirates flight arriving from southern India crash-landed at Dubai International Airport on Wednesday, sending flames and smoke across the runway and briefly turning one of the world’s busiest travel hubs into the scene of a major aviation emergency.

One firefighter died while responding to the incident, the airline’s chairman said.
What Happened During the Landing
According to passenger accounts, the aircraft experienced a landing gear malfunction as it approached Dubai. A passenger identified as Iype Vallikadan told the Associated Press that the pilot announced the problem before the emergency landing was carried out.
Images from the airport showed the aircraft on the runway engulfed in flames, with thick smoke visible from a distance. People at and near the airport also documented parts of the emergency on social media as first responders moved in.
The passengers and crew were evacuated within minutes after the aircraft came to a stop. Emirates has not released further details about what caused the reported landing gear failure.
Passengers Came From 20 Countries
The flight carried travelers from 20 countries, including 226 passengers from India, 24 from Britain, 11 from the United Arab Emirates, six from the United States, and six from Saudi Arabia.
Other passengers were citizens of Turkey, Ireland, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Malaysia, Thailand, Croatia, Egypt, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lebanon, the Philippines, South Africa, Switzerland, and Tunisia.
Saif Mohamed Al Suwaidi, director general of Dubai’s General Civil Aviation Authority, said, “Our primary concern at this moment is the safety and well-being of all passengers and cabin crew.”
What Happens Next
Boeing and the National Transportation Safety Board have assembled technical teams to assist with the response. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, flight data, crew communications, maintenance records, and runway conditions as part of the effort to determine what went wrong.
For travelers, incidents like this can also affect airport schedules, connections, hotel bookings, and onward travel plans, especially at a major international hub such as Dubai. Passengers on disrupted routes are typically advised to check directly with their airline for rebooking information and updates.
