The smell stopped me in my tracks. Beside my flowers lay a small, reddish object so unfamiliar that I stepped back,
wondering whether the cats had left something awful behind. I reached for my phone instead of touching it and began searching for answers,
but the strongest clue was the very thing that made me recoil in utter conf… Continues…
My search led toward an unexpected possibility: an unusual fungus. Some fungi, including stinkhorns, develop striking colors and strange shapes,
producing odors that resemble decaying material. Those smells attract insects that help carry their spores elsewhere. What seemed so disturbing could have been part of an ordinary reproductive process.
Still, a similar photograph online was not enough to confirm exactly what had appeared beside the flowerbed, or establish whether it was harmless.
Learning about that possibility changed my reaction from alarm to curiosity. Many garden fungi help break down organic matter, quietly returning nutrients to the soil.
The discovery reminded me to photograph unfamiliar growths, seek reliable identification, and never eat unidentified mushrooms or let pets sample them.
An expert could help resolve what internet searches could only suggest. I had gone outside to tend the flowers; instead, I gained a deeper appreciation for the living world beneath them.
