My Date Ordered a $150 Lobster Dinner on Our First Date and Then Refused to Pay – Moments Later, Karma Struck Her Right There in Front of Me

At 32, Evan had spent enough time away from dating to feel nervous about trying again. His previous relationship had ended quietly, leaving his days predictable and his evenings empty. His sister Erin finally convinced him to download a dating app, and after several awkward conversations, he matched with Chloe. She was confident, funny, and quick to tease him about the fishing photograph on his profile.

After a few days of messaging, Chloe suggested dinner at an upscale seafood restaurant. Evan agreed but made one point clear before they met: he preferred to split the bill on a first date. Chloe replied almost immediately that the arrangement was fair. Reassured that they understood each other, Evan accepted the restaurant she chose and hoped the evening might become the beginning of something promising.

Chloe arrived wearing a red dress and immediately drew attention. She seemed comfortable in the expensive dining room and told Evan she loved lobster. When the waitress, Maya, brought the menus, Chloe ordered the lobster with extra butter without asking the price. Evan selected salmon and water. Her confidence was attractive at first, though a comment about previous dates being “too cheap” made him uneasy.

The meal itself went better than expected. Chloe photographed the food, took a picture of them together, and laughed at Evan’s nervous jokes. Their conversation flowed easily enough that he began to wonder whether he had judged her too quickly. By the time the plates were cleared, he felt relaxed. Then Maya placed the bill in the center of the table, and Chloe made no move toward it.

Her lobster alone cost $150. With drinks, dessert, and sides, her portion represented most of the check. Evan took out his card and reminded her they had agreed to split the total. Chloe leaned back and said she was not paying. She insisted that men were supposed to cover dates and admitted she had never believed he genuinely meant what he said in their messages.

Evan kept his voice calm. The amount bothered him less than the lie. Chloe tried to shame him, asking whether he was willing to embarrass himself in front of the restaurant over dinner. He replied that expecting her to keep an agreement was not embarrassing. As the argument continued, Maya returned and asked whether everything was all right.

When Evan explained, Chloe dismissed the situation as a misunderstanding. Maya looked at her carefully and then said she recognized her. Two weeks earlier, Chloe had apparently sat at the same table with a different man, ordered lobster, and created a similar dispute over the bill. That date had paid only his portion and left, while Chloe failed to settle the remaining amount.

Chloe denied being there, but Maya was certain and said the restaurant had camera footage. The manager arrived and informed Chloe that she needed to pay both her current share and the outstanding balance from the earlier visit. Her confidence disappeared. Evan asked for a separate check, paid for his salmon, and left Maya a generous tip for speaking honestly.

The humiliation worsened when Chloe’s first card was declined. After searching through her purse, she found another card that worked. The manager warned that if she could not pay, she could spend two weeks working as a dishwasher. Chloe blamed Evan and Maya for making a scene, but neither accepted responsibility for a situation created by her own deception.

Evan left the restaurant and went to Erin’s apartment, where he told his sister the entire story over ice cream. She joked that Chloe was a “serial lobster grifter,” then told Evan she was proud that he had defended himself. The date had failed, but it taught him something more important than whether he was ready for another relationship. Respect was not too much to ask, and keeping his own boundaries did not make him cheap or unkind.
