For more than three decades, his guitar was part of one of rock music’s most unmistakable sounds. Now, the musician who stood beside Lemmy Kilmister through Motörhead’s later years is gone, leaving behind a legacy measured not only in records and concerts, but in the countless musicians and fans influenced by his playing.
Campbell died at the age of 64 after a long and courageous battle in intensive care following what his family described as a complex major operation. His family remembered him not only as a legendary guitarist, but as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who was affectionately known as “Bampi.”
Born in Pontypridd, Wales, Campbell joined Motörhead in 1984 alongside Würzel, becoming part of the guitar lineup that would remain together with Lemmy for more than three decades. His playing helped shape the band’s powerful blend of heavy metal, hard rock, and rock ‘n’ roll.
For fans, Campbell’s contribution was about more than volume. His guitar had attitude, precision, and personality—the kind of playing that could cut through the sheer force of a Motörhead performance without losing its character.
When Lemmy died in 2015, Motörhead came to an end. Campbell, however, wasn’t ready to leave music behind.
He formed Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons with his sons Todd, Dane, and Tyla, creating a new chapter that connected his musical legacy with the next generation of his family. The group went on to record, tour, and perform for audiences around the world.
That chapter says something important about Campbell.
His legacy wasn’t something he simply preserved in old Motörhead records. He continued playing, writing, performing, and sharing music with his sons. His career kept moving forward even after the band that made him famous had come to an end.
Those who knew him also remembered the personality behind the guitar. Motörhead described him as a gifted musician with a strong sense of humor who loved life, while Wacken Open Air remembered him as both remarkably talented and warm, funny, and humble.
That’s perhaps why his passing feels especially significant.
Phil Campbell wasn’t simply a guitarist who happened to play in Motörhead. For 31 years, he was one of the musicians responsible for keeping its distinctive sound alive. And after Motörhead ended, he carried that spirit into another band, this time alongside his own children.
The stages will eventually fall quiet. The amplifiers will be switched off.
But the riffs remain.
And every time that unmistakable Motörhead sound fills a room, Phil Campbell’s contribution will still be there—loud, powerful, and impossible to ignore.
