Later, hunched over our phones, we searched image after image, matching shapes and colors until the answer finally appeared: a beetle pupa.

The fear slowly dissolved into a strange mix of relief and awe.

What we’d treated like a threat was simply life in progress, quietly becoming something new while we stood there, terrified of what we didn’t understand.
