paused, and ran into the trees. Relief replaced his concern. Before heading back, he spotted the snake resting in sunlight; moments later, it slipped away. Nothing
proved it had intentionally led him there. Still, that unexpected encounter had brought him to an animal in trouble—and given an ordinary afternoon a deeply meaningful ending.
