Wife Of Cleveland Police Officer Who Died In Horror Crash That Killed Six Shares Heartbreaking Statement

The wife of Cleveland police officer Matthew Blades has paid tribute to the husband, father, and public servant she lost in a devastating crash that killed six people. Blades, 37, died alongside fellow officer Tom Clough, 38, in the early hours of August 22 while the pair were carrying out police duties.

The officers had been looking for a vehicle believed to be using cloned or false registration plates. At about 3:39 a.m., the other car crossed onto the wrong side of a dual carriageway and struck their police vehicle. Blades, Clough, and all five young men traveling in the other car were pronounced dead at the scene.

The five occupants were later identified as Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Theo Rae, 17, Cole Robert Worthy, 17, and Makai Saddington, 18. Their deaths, together with those of the two officers, left several families facing sudden and profound loss.

Blades’s wife described him as her beloved husband, closest friend, and a devoted father to their two young sons. She also remembered him as a cherished son and brother, a perfect son-in-law, and an uncle who brought fun to the family. In her statement, she said the space created by his death could never be filled.

Her tribute emphasized the courage and selflessness with which he performed his work. Blades died in the line of duty while protecting and serving other people, and his wife said the pain had changed the family’s life forever. She promised that their children would grow up knowing the kind of father he had been.

The love he gave them, she said, would remain even though he was gone. She intends to carry his memory and everything they shared throughout her life. Her words placed the uniformed officer and the private family man side by side, showing the full human cost behind the official account of the collision.

Clough’s relatives and partner also thanked the public for the support and condolences they had received. They called him their hero and remembered his strong sense of humor. Their statement described someone who immediately stepped forward whenever help was needed and who was willing to assist people for any reason.

They also referred to his previous military service and his determination to make the world better. To those closest to him, public duty was not limited to a single job or moment. It was a pattern that ran through his life and shaped how he responded to other people.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct said Cleveland Police had begun pursuing the vehicle after receiving reports connected with numerous incidents. An automatic number plate recognition camera was reportedly triggered because the car was displaying cloned plates.

The pursuit lasted less than seven minutes before the officers discontinued it. The vehicle was then seen entering the wrong side of the road. Seconds later, it collided with the police car carrying Blades and Clough. Investigators have continued examining the precise sequence that led to the crash.

Information later emerged that Saddington had been due to face trial over allegations involving an assault on a police officer and racially aggravated conduct. He had appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court in July, and social-media clips reportedly showed earlier encounters involving police chases. Those details form part of the background, but they do not lessen the grief experienced by any of the families who lost someone.

Seven deaths in a single collision created a tragedy extending far beyond the road itself. Children lost a father, partners lost the people beside them, parents lost sons, and friends were left trying to understand how so many lives ended within moments.

The tributes from both officers’ families have ensured that Matthew Blades and Tom Clough are remembered as individuals rather than names in a police statement. Blades leaves the example of a patient and kind father who served with courage. Clough leaves memories of humor, readiness, and a life spent answering calls for help.

As the investigation continues, their families are concentrating on the people they knew at home. The two officers went to work that night expecting to return to the lives they had built. Their absence now shapes every ordinary day for those who loved them, while the public tributes preserve the service and affection they gave.
